A NEW KIND OF SPACECRAFT

When Columbia lifted off on April 12, 1981 — twenty years to the day after Gagarin — it was the first spacecraft in history designed to fly again.

Nothing so complex had ever flown: main engines, solid boosters, a delta-winged orbiter, and more than two million parts.

WHAT IT BUILT

The Shuttle deployed the Hubble Space Telescope — then went back five times to repair and upgrade it.

It carried the laboratories, trusses, and modules that assembled the International Space Station, a construction project impossible without its cargo bay and robotic arm.

THE HARD LESSONS

The program also carries its griefs: Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003, fourteen astronauts lost.

Both tragedies reshaped how NASA thinks about risk, dissent, and the price of normalizing the extraordinary. Honest history includes them.
