Origins

Artemis is the return trip fifty years in the making. Named for Apollo's twin sister, the program's mandate is different this time: not to visit the Moon, but to stay — to build the infrastructure, habits, and hardware of a permanent human presence beyond Earth.

The Machine

The Space Launch System stands in the Saturn V's weight class: 8.8 million pounds of liftoff thrust, four RS-25 engines that flew on the Space Shuttle, and twin solid boosters burning six tons of propellant per second. Atop it rides Orion, the only capsule rated to carry humans into deep space.

Proving Flight

Artemis I lit up the Florida night in November 2022. Over 25 days, the uncrewed Orion flew 1.4 million miles and swung 270,000 miles from Earth — farther than any human-rated spacecraft has ever traveled — before hitting the Pacific within nautical miles of its recovery ship.

The Gauntlet

Coming home is the hard part. Orion's heat shield endures reentry at 25,000 mph and 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit — half the temperature of the Sun's surface — using a skip-entry maneuver that bounces off the atmosphere like a stone on water to bleed off speed and land with precision.

Crewed Return

Artemis II carries four astronauts around the far side of the Moon — the first crewed lunar voyage since 1972. Beyond it: landers descending to the ice-rich south pole, and the first bootprints on the Moon in over half a century.

Next-Gen Flight

The new era isn't only vertical. The X-59 quiet supersonic demonstrator is rewriting the rules that grounded overland supersonic travel, turning the sonic boom into a soft thump. The same restless engineering that reaches for the Moon is also reshaping the sky between here and there.

The Horizon

Artemis reads like a countdown that never stopped — it just held for the next window. The Moon is the proving ground; Mars is the destination on the far side of the checklist. The first person to walk on another planet is likely alive today, watching these launches like we watch history.
