Description

Skylab, the United States' first space station, launched in 1973 on a Saturn V rocket and operated for about 24 weeks. Constructed by repurposing Apollo program hardware, it included an Orbital Workshop (OWS), a Multiple Docking Adapter (MDA), an Airlock Module (AM), and the Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) for solar observation. At roughly 75,000 kilograms (165,000 pounds) without the docked Apollo capsule, Skylab housed three astronaut crews who conducted nearly 300 scientific experiments. These encompassed life sciences (human adaptation to zero-gravity), physical sciences, and detailed Earth resources observations. Skylab's success as a pioneering research platform paved the way for the International Space Station and future deep space endeavors. The station re-entered Earth's atmosphere in 1979.
